The School of Medicine was invited to speak about its myriad of support programs for students. The presentation took place during the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine’s Primary Care Educational Summit, held annually in mid-October. Student support programs, such as Road to Match, Testing Wisely, and the Pre-Matriculation Program were discussed. The multiple services, such as time management, advanced learning methods, and test taking strategies, that fall under the Academic Counseling umbrella were outlined. Finally, early intervention strategies, such as identifying students at risk of failing through the Academic Achievement System, were presented.
The Summit is held annually for medical schools, like the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, who have received medical student education grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). It serves as a platform for schools across the country to share their work, exchange ideas, and seek collaboration opportunities. Medical schools represented at the Summit included UAB, University of South Alabama, University of Arkansas, University of Oklahoma, University of Missouri, University of Utah, Oklahoma State University, University of Louisville, and University of Kentucky. Each school presented their work on one of the five summit topics – New Frontiers in Primary Care Training, Student Learning and Support Systems, Building a Preceptor Network, Student Recruitment and Engagement, and Post-Baccalaureate Programs.
